Annals of surgery·April 1, 2026·PMID: 41408543

What's New

Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication was associated with durable GERD symptom relief beyond 10 years, with 87% patient satisfaction.

Detailed Summary

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 studies (n=1,334) with a mean follow-up of 13.1 years found that heartburn decreased from 94.2% to 33.7%, regurgitation from 68.7% to 13.4%, and esophagitis from 61.7% to 7.4% after laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication. However, gas-bloating and dysphagia were reported in 53% and 26% of patients, respectively, and 24% resumed proton pump inhibitor use.

Study Population

adults with gastroesophageal reflux disease who underwent laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (n=1,334 across 12 studies)
