Prognostic value of prealbumin and PROFUND index in patients with acute heart failure: Results from the RICA Registry.

Medicina clinica·April 1, 2026·PMID: 41833215

What's New

Low prealbumin levels combined with a high PROFUND index were associated with higher 12-month mortality in elderly patients hospitalized for acute heart failure.

Detailed Summary

A retrospective observational study of 609 patients from the RICA Registry found that low prealbumin (<18 mg/dL), present in 51% of patients, was associated with significantly higher one-year mortality (55.8% vs. 38.0%; p<0.001). Combining low prealbumin with a high PROFUND index modestly improved mortality prediction (AUC=0.685), though neither measure significantly predicted readmission risk.

Study Population

Adults aged 65 years and older hospitalized for acute heart failure (n=609; median age 80 years, 61% female)
