The Optimal Dosage of Isometric Handgrip Exercise for Blood Pressure Reduction: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
What's New
Isometric handgrip training was associated with significant reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure across 31 studies.
Detailed Summary
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 31 studies (n=905) found that isometric handgrip training was associated with reductions in systolic (-5.38 mmHg) and diastolic (-2.71 mmHg) blood pressure. Greater effects were observed in hypertensive versus normotensive groups, and training intensity ≥30% of maximal voluntary contraction performed ≤3 times per week appeared most effective.
Study Population
905 normotensive and hypertensive adults (51% male) across 31 studies
