Pharmacotherapy for mild hypertension.

The Cochrane database of systematic reviews·April 2, 2026·PMID: 41925078

What's New

Antihypertensive pharmacotherapy for mild hypertension without pre-existing cardiovascular disease was not associated with reductions in mortality or cardiovascular events.

Detailed Summary

An updated Cochrane systematic review of 5 RCTs (n=9,124) examined antihypertensive monotherapy or step-up therapy versus placebo or no treatment in adults with untreated mild hypertension and no pre-existing cardiovascular disease. No significant differences were observed in all-cause mortality, total cardiovascular events, stroke, coronary heart disease, or withdrawal due to adverse effects.

Study Population

Adults with untreated mild hypertension (systolic 140-159 mmHg or diastolic 90-99 mmHg) and no pre-existing cardiovascular disease (n=9,124)
