Factors associated with fatigue in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in an outpatient tertiary care setting: a cross-sectional cohort study.

BMJ open·April 1, 2026·PMID: 41922052

What's New

Organ damage accrual and higher BMI were associated with clinically significant fatigue in lupus patients, while disease activity was not.

Detailed Summary

A cross-sectional study of 183 SLE outpatients at a tertiary care center found that those with clinically significant fatigue (FSS ≥4) had higher organ damage scores (SLICC/ACR DI 1.9 vs 1.1, p=0.008) and higher BMI (29.6 vs 27.6 kg/m², p=0.03), while disease activity as measured by SELENA-SLEDAI was not significantly associated with fatigue.

Study Population

183 outpatient adults with systemic lupus erythematosus, predominantly from ethnic minority backgrounds, at a tertiary care rheumatology clinic
