The effects of antenatal interventions on gestational weight gain in low and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

BMJ global health·April 2, 2026·PMID: 41927311

What's New

Multiple antenatal interventions were associated with improved gestational weight gain outcomes among pregnant women in low and middle-income countries.

Detailed Summary

A systematic review of 70 RCTs (59 individual, 11 cluster) found that micronutrient supplementation was associated with reduced risk of inadequate gestational weight gain, while behavioural counselling and physical activity interventions were associated with reduced excessive weight gain (all moderate GRADE certainty). Interventions initiated before 20 weeks of gestation appeared most effective.
