The Effect of Standardized Postoperative Neck and Orofacial Rehabilitation Exercise on Quality of Life in Post-Thyroidectomy Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association·April 1, 2026·PMID: 41778443

What's New

Standardized neck and orofacial rehabilitation exercises were associated with better swallowing-related quality of life after thyroidectomy.

Detailed Summary

A single-center, open-label RCT randomized 356 post-thyroidectomy patients without laryngeal nerve injury to a 3-month rehabilitation exercise program or general advice. The exercise group demonstrated significantly higher swallowing-related QoL scores at 1 month (MDADI 97.4 vs. 88.9, p=0.004) and 6 months (100 vs. 98.9, p=0.020), though higher pain levels were reported at 1 week post-surgery.

Study Population

Post-thyroidectomy patients without definite laryngeal nerve injury (n=356)
